Big Voice London: Model Law Commission

Big Voice London, a youth legal and social mobility charity is looking for volunteers for their upcoming Model Law Commission conference.

Big Voice London seeks to engage young people from non-traditional backgrounds in law and legal policy, with the aim of improving access to the profession. For more information please visit www.bigvoicelondon.co.uk.

The charity is shortly due to begin its flagship project, the Model Law Commission, now in its sixth year. This is three month long project which involves the students mirroring the work of the Law Commission to put together law reform recommendations on specific areas of law. It begins with a weekend conference on 27/28th October 2018 at the University of East London and will culminate in an event hosted at Parliament in February 2019 and attract an audience from the legal profession and politics, all of whom hear the students’ views on the future of our law.

This year’s topics are:

1.            Commercial and Common Law: Insolvency Law

2.            Public Law: Driverless Cars

3.            Land, Trusts and Family Law: Tenancies and the Rent Act

4.            Criminal Law: Offensive Weapons Laws

Unfortunately a few of the speakers who were due to talk to the students on the topic of Tenancies and the Rent Act are now unable to assist and as such the charity would be extremely grateful if any suitable practitioners could offer their time to volunteer as a guest speaker for one hour this weekend.

They are inviting guest speakers to join them to speak on the above topics for an hour on either 27 or 28 October to introduce the area of law to the students. The idea of these talks is to provide the students with more information on the current laws surrounding tenancies, the problems inherent in the current law and potential reform ideas for them to consider. The exact scope of the talk can be discussed with any individuals interested in assisting. They do not require the speakers to be senior practitioners, as long as they feel they have something to contribute to the discussion which they can share with their students (as such trainees, pupils and other junior practitioners are welcome to assist).

They are looking for someone to speak in one of the three following time slots (depending on the individual’s availability and preference):

Saturday 27 October:

11:30am – 12:30pm

2:00pm – 3:00pm

Sunday 28 October:

10:30am – 11:30am

By way of thank you, all guest speakers are invited to join them at Parliament for the launch of the students’ reports in February, where you will have an opportunity to hear the students’ thoughts and reform proposals.

If you are able to assist or would like more information please do get in touch with the Big Voice London team directly on info@bigvoicelondon.co.uk or victoria.anderson@bigvoicelondon.co.uk.
