The new Diversity League Table 2008 highlights some good work, but reveals there’s still a long way to go.
The Diversity League Table for 2008 is now out.
The Diversity League Table is an analysis of gender and ethnicity of the largest law firms in England and Wales. Produced by the Black Solicitors Network it is now in its third year and has established itself as the leading diversity survey within the legal profession.
As well as detailing the demographic trends of major UK law firms in respect of ethnicity and gender, the Diversity League Table gives a firm-by-firm analysis in addition to the important rankings, or "league tables".
New to this issue is the trend analysis which adds an interesting and important dimension to the report.
Mark Harding, Group General Council Barclays Bank plc said of the Diversity League Table, "I believe it offers an unmissable opportunity to raise awareness across the UK profession and provides an invaluable barometer of the success of the collective diversity effort."
The Diversity League Table shows that some good work is clearly being done. However, the report also highlights some worrying issues which indicate that there is still room for significant improvements throughout the profession.
At a time when many are looking to tighten budgets and cut costs the timing of this report should also act a reminder that the focus on diversity is much more than a fad or a luxury; but more like something that should be hard-wired into the DNA of the corporate HR strategy of every law firm in the UK.
Michael Webster, Chair of the Black Solicitors Network observed, "BME solicitors trail a long way behind their white counterparts at every level in the sector, so diversity is still a challenging issue."
