Conveyancing panels
HSBC update
Law Society president John Wotton has met with business secretary Vince Cable to discuss, among other issues, the impact that HSBC's mortgage lender panel policy will have on solicitors and consumers.

Nationwide to remove 'dormant' panel members
Over the next month Nationwide will contact members of its residential conveyancing panel that it believes have been inactive with the building society for 12 months or more. Only those firms with the Law Society's Conveyancing Quality Scheme or who can prove that they have been active will be able to appeal to be reinstated.

Law Society and SRA intervene in PII case
The Law Society and the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) have been granted leave to intervene by the High Court in a case that could have a major impact on professional indemnity insurance (PII) for solicitors.

Client financial protection arrangements: Law Society response
We have responded to the SRA’s second stage financial protection review, which sets out how the SRA intends to implement the changes to indemnity insurance and compensation arrangements announced in April 2011. The issues include the financial stability of insurers and minimum acceptance periods for quotations.

Human rights essay competition
Law students, trainee solicitors and young lawyers from England and Wales are invited to enter the Law Society's 2012 Graham Turnbull essay competition. The title of this year's essay is 'In the light of the growing prison population, should we look for alternatives to imprisonment?'

The deadline has been extended for the InterLaw Diversity Forum survey on career experiences in the legal sector, which aims to understand what drives or hinders career progression. The deadline for responses has been extended to 31 January.
