The Legal Services Commission (LSC) today announced the appointment of its new Chief Executive, Matthew Coats, arriving from the UK Border Agency (UKBA).
Matthew is currently Interim Head of Border Force. Prior to that he led the asylum and immigration system and has been at the UKBA since 2006. He previously worked at the Department of Health and in the NHS as hospital manager.
Matthew will take up his new position on 27 February 2012 and will then become Chief Executive of the Legal Aid Agency, within the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), when the LSC is abolished. Subject to parliamentary approval, the LSC is due to be abolished in April 2013.
Matthew will lead the LSC as it progresses with its extensive change programme, including implementation of legal aid reforms and the move to an Executive Agency of the MoJ.
